SOLD
It's that time of year again! The Coors Western Art Show & Sale is coming up and after many, many hours of preparation, this drawing is hanging at the show right now just waiting for opening night. I have a total of 5 drawings again this year, but two of which will be part of the silent auction during the Red Carpet Reception and won't be shown if they sell that night.

This drawing is called "Running on the Open Range" is 21 3/4 x 27 $8,900.00 and was my favorite of all the drawings to do because it was a little different for me. I feel like the horse in the middle looks like it could jump out of the page and the composition is something I worked hard on to achieve that feeling.

For more information about the Coors show, please visit http://www.nationalwestern.com/ and click on the Coors Art Show link on the left side of the home page.

Legacy Gallery

SOLD

I have recently joined Legacy Gallery which has locations in Scottsdale, AZ and Jackson, WY and am excited to work with them. The report I got from Matt is that the facility was great and a fun time was had by all. I was feeling kind of left out because I was the only one who stayed home of all my friends that go, but someone had to watch dogs and I had a deadline looming, so no fun for me. It's O.K. though, I had been out of town in Oklahoma for a week beforehand, and had had enough of hotels and eating out. We have no shows lined up until June, so after I finish my projects that are due, will finally get to start painting. I've been busy getting the drawings for the Coors Western Art Show and Sale ready and am just finishing up the two small pieces for the silent auction, which only the people that attend opening night will see. The photo I've attached is an attempt at a quick snapshot as it was going out the door to be delivered. The angle makes everything look a little weird, but I will post a proper image once I get one. This drawing is very large and very complicated as you can see. It didn't help that he is holding a reata which are the least favorite things to draw in the entire world. (besides rein chains)

We did take a week and go to Hawaii for some R and R before the full court press that is the Coors every year. Kayaked for the first time and did a lot of snorkeling, which I love. Came home to a dreadful snow storm that became a mini-blizzard the closer we got to our house. Rude welcome home after being in the 80's all week.

I'm going to start painting after the holidays and if you never see any of them on here, its because it didn't go so well! Just kidding! It may take a long time, but I know that I can do it (eventually) and am looking forward to the challenge.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!!

Sterling

Just finished my latest piece. Makes me wonder if we are in for a particularly harsh winter since we've had interesting summer weather too. It has the effect of keeping me in my warm little corner to draw, which is good since I have deadlines fast approaching for some things coming up. I am working on a drawing for the Cowgirl Up! show in Wickenburg, AZ that is of Stacy Grosskopf and her horse. Totally different for me and I'm loving the whole scene. This photo is of one weeks worth of work, so it looks kind of scary right now, but I think it will end up being one of my best. I am working on a couple of pieces for the Coors show that are also "whole scene" drawings. It just means I have to work larger to get the same amount of detail, but since I'm getting faster it's O.K.
Stay Warm!

Karmel

We are doing the Castle Rock Artfest this weekend. Not to sound like a negative nellie, but the weather is supposed to be kind of awful, so not exactly thrilled about that! But, it is our "local" show, so we get to see lots of friends and customers which is always fun!

Had a nice chat with Jennifer Dennison of Western Horseman magazine yesterday. She drove up from the Springs to hang out at our humble shack in the woods for the morning to interview me for an upcoming issue. She took pictures of me and my dog, Abby, that looked like they might be funny, so am hoping they use one of those in the article. I, like most people, hate having my picture taken, but maybe one will turn out and be usable. :)It was great hanging out and talking art with someone who shares that interest.

I've been invited to do Cowgirl Up! in Wickenburg, Arizona this spring, so am working on new stuff for that. I was invited last year, but had to decline because of my schedule. We always need an excuse to get to Arizona in the winter and to see our friends over there. Should be fun!

I am working on more story driven drawings right now, and am excited for the challenge. Full backgrounds, the whole person on horseback, things like that. The prevailing wisdom in this economy is to scale things back, but I feel like right now I need to challenge myself and do bigger and better. We'll see how I feel after the first one is finished!!

Show weekend

We had a fantastic time in Santa Fe this weekend! It was exhausting but great and all in all I think it was a real success. Opening night was Friday night and we had about 200 people there according to the security guy. Food was provided by Jinja Bistro, owned by Doug Lanham who owns the ranch that had the BBQ the next day. I am going to harass him until he gives me the recipe for the prickly pear margaritas that they served that night. YUM! Will post it if I am able to get it. As of opening night we sold 8 of the 20 pieces that I did for the show, which is sort of miracle these days, so am really proud of that fact. The show hangs for another month so we'll see how it all ends up. James Robinson is the super salesman at Altermann and he has done a great job. After the opening we went to dinner at a restaurant called Maria's that is apparently an institution in Santa Fe. We went with a big group and we were put in a separate room called the Robert Redford room since I guess that is where he sits when he goes there. Great Mexican food, laughed a lot and had so much fun. Karen (Prairie Karen) Wall Ross, Steve Bell, Emily Kitching (Eclectic Horseman) little Sydney joined us as well as good friends of Karen's whose names I can't remember right now (I knew it yesterday!) and Pedro Marquez and his girlfriend Anna Marie. After dinner, Pedro got out his guitar and we sat outside of the restaurant where he treated us to a couple of songs, which were as wonderful as you would think they would be. As we were sitting out there, the restaurant staff came out (they were now closed) and were taking a break. The bartender asked to see Pedros's guitar so he asked if she played and she sang/played a song that she wrote and it was jaw-dropping awesome. That was very cool way to end the night.

Saturday afternoon we went to look at the Canyon Road gallery scene with our good friend Stephen Lee, who is also an artist, and does sculpture. We goofed off with him most of the day until it was time to go to the BBQ. That ended up being alot of fun too, I got to meet and chat with collectors and people involved with the Spanish Mustangs, eat great BBQ and have more yummy margaritas. Weather was perfect and the weekend could not have gone better.

Now that all of that is over, I plan on doing some fun stuff including playing with painting (oil) and seeing where that takes me. I have more deadlines coming up soon for other things, so it's back to work in a day or two, but for now, I plan on cleaning my house since its been neglected for awhile now.

Thanks to everyone who attended or emailed with their well wished, it means a lot to me! Thanks to Emily, Steve, Karen, Wally, Stephen for coming up to support me and thanks to Altermann Galleries, Tony, Richard, and James.

Almost here!

The show is fast approaching and I am really ready for it to be here. Going shopping tomorrow for my outfits with my friend Karen who is a consultant on things like that (prairiekaren.com) She dresses me for all of my important events. If it were up to me, I would wear comfy boots, jeans and a t-shirt, but that doesn't really work.

Here are a few of the last drawings for the show. I smartly decided to do the small pieces last, and boy am I glad I did. I'm having a tough time concentrating now and that hasn't helped get things finished. I have one more to do and then I'm done!

We have had a bunch of pre-sales for the show and that has helped me relax a little. I think it's going to be a fun/crazy/exciting event.

The drawing on the left is called "Little Horse Big Sky" and is one of the Spanish Mustang pieces. They did an article for my upcoming show at Altermann Galleries (Altermann.com) and then emailed me a few weeks ago and said that they decided to use this image for the cover too. I have been a subscriber of this magazine since they first started publication, so was thrilled to have been chosen to be a part of this issue. WesternArtCollector.com is their website. Check it out!

This horse is "Tripper" and is owned by Kevin Hall of Kiowa, Colorado. Tripper is one of the first horses I ever drew at the very beginning of my career.

Still have 4 more drawings to do for the show, and the deadline is fast approaching! I saved the smaller ones for last, so I wouldn't have to completely stress out. :)

Karmel

<img style="float:left; Doug Lanham was kind enough to let us take some photos of his two mustangs, Blue and Cherokee and then contacted Donna Mitchell of the Little Cayuse Ranch (www.LittleCayuseRanch.com)south of Santa Fe so that we could run down there and take photos of her herd. It was rainy and cloudy, but we had so much fun meeting these folks, learning more about the Spanish mustang and getting lots of good reference photos. I think we took over 500 hundred photos. I have already started a drawing from this weekend and will post it soon. Later that day we went to the gallery to drop off one of my latest pieces that will be in Altermann's June 27th auction and catch up with them before heading home that night. It was a long day, up at 6 a.m. drive 100 miles to the Little Cayuse, drive back to Santa Fe and home in Colorado by midnight. All I had to do was sit in the car, but for some reason was really tired the next day. Thanks to Doug and Donna for their help and hospitality!!

For sure, August 7th is the artist reception at Altermann Galleries, Santa Fe, for my one woman show! (Altermann.com for more info)I am deep in the weeds (as they say) getting ready for it, and wondering often if I will be able to get it all done. I always do, but this time we are talking 20 drawings, the largest collection of drawings ever available at one place and one time. I shouldn't think about it anymore. One half of the drawings will be of Spanish Mustangs as this show is partially to benefit the preservation of the Spanish Mustang, and the other will be my more western themed drawings. I plan on posting some of the completed works on this blog as they are finished, but ALtermann will have a complete web catalog before the show. Feel free to call if you have any questions about any of the drawings, and one of us will get back to you right away.

The above drawing is one for the show and are Spanish mustangs. It is beautiful today after our little blizzard yesterday. It makes me want to stay inside and draw, which is a good thing since the one woman show will be here before I know it. The date has been changing a little so I am just trying to get as much done as I can in case it really is in August as they are saying. Yikes! Matt is going to need to learn how to do hand massage. :)

The Celebration of Fine Art is winding down this weekend. I know Matt is going to be happy to get home. It was great fun meeting new people and selling art at the same time. I will miss the dart games at the O'Cualain's and getting to decide where to go for dinner that doesn't require an hour long drive. Matt got his reprieve from winter and while the dogs weren't sure what to think, they are now happy to be home. (Matt brought me and the dogs home last week since I refused to fly after my last flight...long story)

Going to go draw now...

Karmel

Big News

I have signed up to do my first one-woman show at Altermann Galleries in Santa Fe. The show is scheduled to start OCtober 5th and will have the largest amount of originals that I have ever had for sale in one place. I plan on doing 20! Some big, some small and everything in between. Which means that I will have no life for the next several months, but that is O.K. It's exciting and will be fun to see how far I can push myself. I will be adding additonal information as I know more.

The Coors show went great as I sold out again this year. I didn't win people's choice this time, but that is fine because a really nice and talented new artist to the show named Teresa Elliot won and I love her work. Good stuff!

Matt is working hard in Scottsdale at the Celebration of Fine Art (celebrateart.com)that runs through March 29th. We have a nice booth with prints and a few smaller originals. The above image is an original I started and finished while I was down there. It was purchased by a lovely gentleman before it was even finished! Which made me even more particular about how it looked when it was done. I will be heading back down there on Thursday (March 5th) and am not sure how long I will be there this time. I have been dividing my time between Colorado and Arizona. It had been hectic and fun, and we have had a great time with our friends in Arizona. I better live it up since after this, I wont be leaving the house again for many months!

Coors Western Art Show

Here are two new pieces that are being shown at the Coors Western Art Show and Sale during the National Western Stock Show.

The first one is Buck Brannaman's horse Arc. I have drawn this horse a few times, the last one was my print called "End of the Day' The reference photo I worked from is also from that same day, but earlier. I called it "Working" but maybe it should have been called "Earlier in the Day". Doubt many people would have got it though, since that print is sold out. I really like this drawing. The background was fun to do, a couple of cows, but also I filled in the sky part in order to really show off the the sunlight on his mane.

The second one is called "Cattin" because that is the name of the horse and is owned by Doug and Melinda Ballard. Cattin is a flea bitten grey, but in the interest of time, I decided not to draw the flea bite parts. I have been meaning to do a hackamore piece for awhile.

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone is recovering from the holidays! It was low-key here, had to finish a drawing and my brother had deadlines at his job, so he had to cancel his visit. I am looking forward to going to Scottsdale for the Celebration of Fine Art in a couple of weeks. I am going to be posting more information about that soon and sending out an email detailing the schedule and things like that. It will be weird drawing in front of people, but its probably good to get out of my "comfort zone" a little and it will be a nice chance to finally meet clients that I have only met over the phone.

I just finished a new drawing last night and thought I would post it for all to see. There are a few glares from my lighting. This horse is named Gabe, he is a mustang and owned by Brenda Valetta (hope I spelled that right) The original is being sent to Altermann Galleries March auction. I'm not sure of a title yet, I may just call it "Gabe" for lack of anything creative. I love drawing big, wild manes, so this one was fun. http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

Auction results

Hi All,

Altermann Galleries Dec. 6th auction was a success. "The Next Generation" sold for $12,000.00 (including buyers premium) The estimate was between $10,000- $11,000. Its always nice to sell within or above the auction estimate and its always a gamble, so I am very pleased. It was also a gamble to do that particular drawing since I have never drawn a child on horseback before. I wanted to prove that I can draw faces, since most of my work is sort of faceless. That has always been more due to the fact that I want it to be generic so that the viewer could imagine whatever (or whoever) they want. I started out in school doing only portraits, so it was sort of a back to the beginning experience for me. I am going to be posting my two latest drawings in the next few days that will be for sale at the Coors Western Art Show and Sale. I did three pieces for the main show and 2 pieces for the silent auction which can only be viewed and purchased on the opening night. I did a pencil drawing of a corriente (cow, bull, steer, not sure) and a cute foal drawing that is called "All Legs" because it is a very vertical drawing of a new foal with long, long legs. Kind of fun.

P.S. The notecards have been a tremendous success and we are at the moment sold out. Matt is on his way to order more today and should have more by next week. Thanks to all who have ordered and feel free to let me know if there is a particular drawing that we should make into a notecard. karmel@karmeltimmons.com

Yeah! I am going to have 3 new prints soon, so check back. This new drawing that I am featuring is going to be for sale at Altermann Galleries December auction on Dec 6th. The estimate is between 10,000 to 11,000. I normally don't draw children, but something about this one changed my mind. He was competing at the Californios in Red Bluff and was dead serious about what he was doing, which I just loved. He is Richard Caldwell's grandson, his name is Chantz and his horse is Tabu. Nancy, his grandmother, said he was 8 years old at that time.

Karmel

Southwest Art Magazine Article

This week has been pretty interesting. The article in Southwest Art came out and the response has been wonderful! I've been invited to some shows that unfortunately I have had to turn down due to time constraints. The Cowgirl Up! show at the Desert Caballeros was kind enough to send an invite to participate in their show next year, but it falls right at the worst time of year for me, where I have many deadlines that all converge at once. I just need to draw a little faster, I guess. Thanks to all that have emailed to say that they have seen the article, its been great to hear from so many old friends! I plan on having the article scanned and posted to the website for people to read.

New Drawing

Hi Everyone,

Here is a new drawing I am working on. I don't have a title for it yet, but have been thinking about one as I go. This drawing is sort of different for me, but I like the idea of putting as much detail into a drawing of a horse as I can. It's big, about 16 x 20 (big for me) and has been a lot of fun to work on the the concho and eye, but its a long way from finished as you can see. I will be updating again next week with it's progress.

Karmel

Welcome to Karmel Timmons Fine Art!

Hello! Welcome to our completely re-designed website! I have wanted to do some new things to enhance my website for a long time, and eventually decided to go with scrapping the old one, and investing in a complete re-do. I am also jumping on the blogging bandwagon as you can see, or "diary" as we are calling it here, and am willing myself to keep up with it and let all of you know what is going on when it actually happens. It's a great new way to instantly update everyone on the latest stuff rather than forgetting to give the information to the cool people that do my website. Speaking of, Steve Bell and Emily Kitching of Eclectic Horseman Communications did a wonderful job on this re-design and I highly recommend using their services if you are thinking of doing the same to your site, or having one built from scratch. Eclectic-Horseman.com Can't say enough about them! I gave Steve a one sentence generalization of how I wanted it to look, and look what he came up with!

Another new feature that I have had lots of requests for over the years is a FAQ section. Art info, like what kind of pencils and paper I use, to ordering information has been covered and I hope people find it useful. I will be adding more answers to questions as we go along.

Matt (my husband) will be adding posts to this as well. He runs most of this show and usually has more information than I do.

One quick note of news. There will be a full feature article coming out in Southwest Art Magazine in August of 2008, which hits the newsstands last week in July. I have been in that magazine before, but not with a feature, so I am very excited.

Also, for those of you who see us at the summer shows, make sure you check out our schedule, which is updated. We kick things off in Breckenridge over the July 4th weekend. Hope to see you there. It will be good to get out of the house again and reacquaint myself with the outside world. :)

For now...

Karmel
